Good, Bad, Ugly

“Merlin.” I crossed to him and knelt down.

His body shuddered again. The pupils in his eyes became smaller and smaller, almost to a pinpoint. A second later, the shuddering stopped. Merlin blinked. Brown pupils dilated back to their normal size. He stood up.

I rose too. “You’ve had a vision.”

“Gargoyles.” He took my hand and squeezed it. “We have to go.”

“Where?”

Merlin sprinted into the crowd, toward the Mysterious Faces tent. I followed behind with Grey, Gia, Mark, Oliver, Paul and a few others. We caught up just as Merlin waved his hand and magicked his way through into the tent.

When we came up, the attendant barked, “You need a ticket.”

“Grey, pay him.” I hooked a thumb at Ryan’s muscled adopted brother.

Grey scowled, but as I predicted, money-bags had a few pounds in his pocket. He handed them to the attendant. We ran into the tent only to stop short at the mirrors reflecting back everything. Different shapes and sizes distorted and startled as we wound through the maze. I found Merlin close to the exit.

Down on all fours, he sniffed the floor by an open tent flap.

“Did they spell him?” Grey asked loudly.

Merlin bounded over to the tent flap. He touched a handprint on rough fabric. “This is fresh blood.” He held it up to his nose. “Gargoyle blood. Vane had it right. There is a full moon tonight. They’ll be at peak strength.”

“What about wizards?” Oliver said nervously.

Blake adjusted his glasses. “Our magic will be weaker against them.”

I went out of the tent and scanned nearby streets. Most were dark and narrow and could have hidden anything. Then a sound like a snake along the ground slithered its way to my ears. It came from one of the many dark streets. I took a step toward it and a glint of golden light blinked from one of them. As soon as I noticed the light, it disappeared. In the pit of my stomach, certainty formed. Golden-Hainey was guiding me.

“Eowlyn,” Merlin shouted. He pointed to another alley.

I hooked a thumb to the alley that previously had the golden light. “No, it’s that one.”

Merlin shook his head. He pointed in the opposite direction. “That one is the largest. I know my brother—”

“Trust me.” I grabbed his hand and tried to tug him forward. “We only have one shot to get this right.”

Merlin disentangled his hand. “You go that way. I’ll go this way. It’s more efficient to split up.”

I stomped my foot. “How am I supposed to stop them? Ask pretty please?” I lowered my voice. “Gargoyles are here. You need to protect us.”

Merlin turned and walked off.

“Ugh, stupid man.” I whirled around to Gia and the group. “If you really want to save her, come with me. Merlin can handle himself.”

Eight of us ran into the dark street. My boots clattered against hard cobblestone and misshapen shadows had me fully expecting Jack the Ripper to jump us any moment. We crossed a cross street and found Ryan facing off with a hulking gargoyle in a small walkway just off the street that led down to basement doors.
